Potassium Iodide (KI), is used in several different medical situations, one of which is to loosen and break up mucus in the airways. It can help the symptoms of long-term lung problems such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It can also help with many different thyroid gland problems, such as overactive thyroid conditions. Along with these uses, it is also known to help “evacuate and shelter” the body during a radiological emergency. Some of these emergencies may release large amounts of radioiodine into the environment. Since iodine concentrates in the thyroid gland, inhalation or ingestion of food contaminated with radioiodine can lead to radiation injury to the thyroid.
